Restore nested-row query performance and gate CI regressions - #2356
Restore nested-document query performance after #2312, add the missing workload to the benchmark, and fail CI for large paired regressions.
Issue #2355 reports 14–45× slower cold hydration and 4–28× slower writes. Its query joins issues to 20-block documents and selects whole documents without a limit. The previous benchmark selected flat fields under a limit and missed the cost.
Metadata at publication
PR #2312 recursively normalized callback inputs to protect computed metadata. That traversal repeated across query boundaries and scaled with document size. The maintainer approved a weaker rule to remove this cost.
Intermediate projections, QueryRefs, functional callback inputs, inline includes, and Effect outputs retain authored fields. Actual Collection publication supplies genuine computed metadata. Authored reserved fields therefore remain application data until publication.
Structured whole-source selections and spreads retain source attribution. Functional selections retain it when they return the source row directly. Other projections, including implicit joined namespaces and grouped roots, receive output Collection attribution.
Joined results use pair identities by default, including whole-source selections. Their published $key identifies the result pair, while source-attributed selections retain the source's $origin, $hasPendingWrites, and $collectionId. Explicit custom keys keep their existing semantics. This prevents one child joined to two matches from collapsing into one result.
The compiler transports one authored value with separate internal attribution and route context. Materialization follows compiled include paths and keeps ordinary document contents opaque. It preserves correlation, descendants, descriptors, prototypes, and user symbols. Existing ordered-window, cache, and replay obligations remain.
Compiled resolvers are an explicit dependency of the internal facade adapter. The production path no longer retains its generic recursive fallback. Direct component drivers still test that helper explicitly. Resolver caching avoids repeated work for the same immutable row and plan.
Benchmark coverage and CI policy
The nested-document workload runs across every scale, index mode, and synced/optimistic update scenario. Candidate and merge-base sources run the same harness on one runner with three fresh-fixture repetitions.
CI fails when:
A query's geometric mean increases by more than 30% for writes or 50% for cold hydration.
One configuration's fastest candidate repetition exceeds its slowest base repetition by more than 50%, plus 0.05 ms for writes or 5 ms cold.
Reports omit cases or required observations, duplicate cases, or contain invalid timings.
The localized gate requires at least three repetitions on both sides. Reports and job summaries survive gate failures. Improvements in another query or metric cannot cancel a query's regression.
Ten historical same-runtime CI pairs showed query shifts up to +10% writes and +20.3% cold within one job. Individual cold outliers exceeded 7×. Cross-job identical-baseline ratios reached 2.76× writes and 1.88× cold. These observations support paired comparisons and repetition, but do not establish a noise ceiling.
The first remote three-repetition benchmark passes the new gate: 0.65× overall writes and 0.51× cold against the merge base. The nested-document query improves by 90.4% writes and 96.9% cold across configurations. Its candidate is merge commit 88544ac64, with parents 8feab6ea3 and PR head 066d0dd26. This is historical evidence. Later review changes require fresh measurements. At 10,000 issues:

Local pre-2312 bracketed controls also exposed drift. The candidate measured 1.138× writes and 1.354× cold against the first baseline, failing issue-detail cold at 1.568×. Against the repeated unchanged baseline, it measured 1.038× and 1.051× and passed. The unchanged baseline itself shifted 1.096× and 1.288×. Both outcomes remain recorded, and thresholds did not change.
A later simplified candidate against a repeated predecessor control measures 1.00× writes and 0.96× cold. The gate passes with one diagnostic write flag. This observation precedes the final pair-key amendment. The final pair-key source measures 0.91× writes and 0.80× cold against the same control, passing with no diagnostic flags. These results establish neither zero overhead nor a precise cleanup speedup. The benchmark guide and review measurement table preserve source controls, all cases, repetitions, and limits.
Two later remote runs fail the same localized cold gate for optimistic comment counts at 1,000 rows without indexes. Run 42105504239 measures 7.266 ms base versus 17.383 ms candidate. The source-identical f34738e69 repeat measures 8.600 ms versus 17.413 ms. The CI table retains both failures. Overall improvements do not cancel them.
Local Node 24.8 profiling reproduces the shift and attributes 12.292 ms across three affected hydrations to garbage collection. The harness created full document trees for unrelated queries. It now populates those trees only for the document case. All 126 issue, user and comment source fingerprints remain equal, as do all six document-case fixtures. Normal GC, query assertions, writes, repetitions and thresholds remain.
The repaired full local benchmark passes the unchanged gate: 0.61× writes and 0.51× cold. The formerly failing case measures 4.149 ms base versus 3.547 ms candidate. The fixture-isolation table retains all 504 repetition observations. Production sources match f34738e. The fresh remote run passes at head eb9ba9a through merge b2ac23b. It measures 0.62× writes and 0.49× cold overall, with no regression flags. Nested-document writes improve by 91.0% and hydration by 97.1% across configurations. The former failing case measures 5.677 ms base versus 6.471 ms candidate, with overlapping repetition ranges. Both earlier failures remain recorded.
The subsequent remote run also passes at d894ff6 through merge 2b00a3a. Overall ratios are 0.63× writes and 0.46× cold. Nested-document writes improve by 90.9% and hydration by 97.1%. One issue-detail write configuration carries a diagnostic flag, while its query mean changes by +2.6%. This remains below the unchanged failure gates. These measurements do not establish zero overhead.
The final-head benchmark passes at ce94a39 through merge 2c0c5aa. Overall ratios are 0.60× writes and 0.51× cold, with no diagnostic regression flags. Nested-document writes improve by 91.2% and hydration by 96.9%. Earlier observations and failures remain recorded.
Shipped size
The full production export bundle shrinks by 155 minified JS bytes (94 gzip and 85 brotli). The ordinary app shrinks by 266 JS bytes. The includes fixture grows by 479 JS bytes and 73 gzip bytes, while brotli shrinks by 18 bytes. All emitted minified ESM JS modules shrink by 1,667 bytes. Overall shipped JavaScript meets the maintainer requirement. Source-line negativity is not required.
🔬 Oracle Coverage
The coverage map identifies publication, callback-input, route-context, payload-work, public-type, and copy-law owners.
Law: Authored intermediate values remain intact. Collection publication supplies genuine attribution and the computed result identity. Internal materialization preserves correlation and descendants without exposing compiler state. Authority: the approved boundary-only and joined-pair decisions, plus the revised architecture.
Reach: Existing publication, route, native-type, and payload-work campaigns retain their budgets. The copy owner reaches 24 path/prototype/change states across 384 generated comparisons. Group reduction retains 30 finite histories and 150 component checkpoints. The joined-key owner reaches all 4,608 states across 192 finite programs, six cuts and four receivers. Seeded and random campaigns add 160 histories.
RED: Extended owners reject lost metadata/context, join collisions, wrapped aggregate type gaps, array prototype loss, and recursive payload work before their repairs. The review records distinguish valid law failures from setup errors and retired expectations.
GREEN: Final DB shard 1 passes 16,367 tests across 198 files. The affected run passes 7,802 runtime tests across 16 files. Native types pass 33 owner checks and 85 supplemental checks. Full DB source/test tsc reports zero diagnostics. Minified public API checks and the rebuilt size comparison pass.
Mutant: Original or hostile implementations fail the shared comparisons. Controls include unmatched-only join repairs, lost aggregate provenance, corrupted payload values, ordinary-array shell replacement, and source-key preference in routing/publication. Direct seed/path replay rejects the old joined-key behavior and passes after exact source restoration.
Limits: Runtime evidence uses bounded eager core sources. It does not establish provider delivery, framework scheduling, arbitrary recursion, installed-package inference, or universal elapsed-time bounds. Explicit type erasure and the existing large caseWhen fallback remain recorded inference limits.
The high-review record retains every finding, neighboring-law interaction, RED/GREEN command, calibration, source binding, and current limit. It also explains stale group-stage metadata expectations and the approved pair-key amendment.
The prep-review record preserves an earlier chronology qualification. Sixteen initial scalar-carrier expectations were invalid and receive no product-evidence credit. Valid native name comparisons exposed the defect before edits. The revised scalar replay on original builders is retrospective.
The CI follow-up records conditional inline-wrapper type repair, grouped publication calibration, and replay registration. Aggregate provenance and overload simplification change types without adding runtime markers or traversal. A later type repair gives possibly-empty declared grouping lists an optional missing $key. Nonempty tuples and prior definite grouping retain required keys. The expanded owner rejects the original overload and three wrong repairs. All three changed builder files emit byte-identical JavaScript against eb9ba9a. The final oracle cleanup derives grouping expectations from call possibilities and preserves all 24 generated consumer programs exactly. Production source at ce94a39 matches d894ff6.

The query compiler now transports source metadata separately from authored values and applies computed virtual properties at Collection publication boundaries. Materialized include paths use compiled resolvers. Builder types track aggregate and grouping state. The benchmark harness adds nested-document coverage, repeated samples, report validation, and CI regression enforcement.

Summary
Metadata and aggregate type contracts packages/db/src/query/builder/*, packages/db/tests/query/builder/*, packages/db/tests/query/virtual-row-fields-types-oracle.test-d.ts
Builder types preserve selection shape, track grouping and aggregates, and carry aggregate provenance through expression operators. Type-oracle cases cover authored reserved-field collisions, wrappers, and grouped results.
Compiler metadata transport and publication packages/db/src/query/compiler/*
The compiler carries source metadata and routing separately, handles join public keys, and applies computed virtual properties at Collection roots. Grouped outputs no longer aggregate source virtual metadata.
Materialized include resolution packages/db/src/query/live/materialized-pipeline.ts, packages/db/src/query/live/bucket-facade-adapter.ts, packages/db/src/query/live/collection-config-builder.ts
Materialized compilations provide include-path resolvers. Bucket facades use those resolvers while preparing and applying changes.
Runtime oracles and policy records packages/db/tests/query/*, packages/db/tests/collection-subscribe-changes.test.ts, docs/guides/*, docs/contributing/*, .changeset/quiet-documents-return.md
Tests cover publication metadata, nested payload work, include routing, join identities, and callback input shapes. Documentation records the boundary between authored intermediate values and published Collection metadata.
Benchmark Regression Gate

Summary
Nested-document benchmark and repeated samples scripts/bench/incremental-update.ts
The benchmark joins open issues to nested documents, checks query results, and records repeated cold-hydration and write samples.
Report validation and regression comparison scripts/bench/compare-incremental-update.ts, scripts/bench/compare-incremental-update.test.mjs, scripts/bench/README.md
The comparator validates benchmark reports and applies query-level and persistent per-case regression thresholds. Tests cover threshold boundaries, malformed reports, and sample behavior.
The workflow runs the regression test and repeated base and candidate benchmarks, publishes available reports, and fails when comparison reports a regression.

Explanation
[#2355] The summaries report that compiler cleanup now operates at result roots and compiled include paths, without recursively scanning ordinary document payloads. The payload-work oracle checks hydration and synced replacements across query boundaries. scripts/bench/incremental-update.ts adds the unbounded open-issue join with whole 20-block documents and verifies results across configurations. The PR reports a passing remote comparison at eb9ba9a, with nested-document writes 91.0% faster and hydration 97.1% faster than the merge base. The later grouping changes are reported to emit byte-identical JavaScript; a fresh benchmark of d894ff6 is not reported. The excluded scripts/bench/boundary-only-ci-2026-11-05.csv is not needed for this conclusion.

Comparing 2c0c5aa61 (this PR) against 8feab6ea3 (base). Write times are per-write medians over 100 iterations (20 warmup writes). Timings use the median of 3 fresh fixture repetition(s).
Overall median write time vs base: 0.60× · cold hydrate time: 0.51× (geometric mean of per-case ratios; lower is faster).
Writes: 0 regression(s), 12 improvement(s) (threshold: ±20% and >0.05ms).
Cold hydrate: 0 regression(s), 12 improvement(s) (threshold: ±50% and >5ms).
CI regression gate: PASS. Query geometric means: >+30% writes or >+50% cold. A case also fails when every repetition exceeds the entire base range by >+50% and the metric's absolute floor.
Per-case flags are noisy on shared runners. Read the geometric means first.

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Consider a non-blocking rollout for the new hard gate.
This step makes noisy shared-runner benchmarks block merges. The README reports that an unchanged baseline drifted by 1.288× on cold hydration between runs. It also reports that one final candidate comparison failed the issue-detail cold gate at 1.568×. The author states that remote observations of the three-repetition workflow are still missing.
This gate can fail on noise before anyone has measured its false-positive rate in CI.
Run the gate in report-only mode for the first few PRs. Keep continue-on-error: true on the comparison step and drop the enforcing step until same-code paired runs confirm the margins. Alternatively, make the enforcing step conditional on a repository variable so maintainers can disable it without a code change.

Do not require $key for a possibly empty array callback.
A callback declared to return a broad ReadonlyArray does not match the empty-array overload, even when it returns [] at runtime. The general overload sets hasGrouping: true, so GetRawResult and GetInlineResult require $key. The compiler skips grouping for the empty expression list, so the inline result has no $key.
Adjust the overloads so $key is required only when the callback returns a scalar or a statically non-empty grouping array. Keep the existing statically empty-array exception.

Law: declared grouping-list possibilities govern generated key presence before Collection publication; authored fields remain intact.
Reach: 403 declared states reached 24 times, including 90 new list/collision states. RED: expanded native owner rejects unchanged eb9ba9a (24 failed, 9 passed). GREEN: 68 native and supplemental checks pass; full DB tsc has zero diagnostics. Mutants requiring every key, omitting every array key, and erasing prior grouping each fail TS2344 constraints. Limits: finite inferred forms; explicit any erasure retains compatibility behavior. All three builder files emit identical JavaScript.

Model grouping accumulation independently instead of storing final keyed answers per case. All 24 generated consumers and expectations remain byte-identical; the last-call-only rival fails native constraints. The owner passes 33 checks, final-source receiving consumer passes, and full DB tsc has zero diagnostics after call-literal narrowing. Production sources, shipped JavaScript, histories, observations, budgets and thresholds remain unchanged.

🎯 Changes
Their published
$keyidentifies the result pair, while source-attributed selections retain the source's$origin,$hasPendingWrites, and$collectionId.
Its candidate is merge commit
88544ac64, with parents8feab6ea3and PR head066d0dd26. This is historical evidence. Later review changes require fresh measurements. At 10,000 issues:Local pre-2312 bracketed controls also exposed drift.
The high-review record retains every finding, neighboring-law interaction, RED/GREEN command, calibration, source binding, and current limit. It also explains stale group-stage metadata expectations and the approved pair-key amendment.
The prep-review record preserves an earlier chronology qualification. Sixteen initial scalar-carrier expectations were invalid and receive no product-evidence credit. Valid native name comparisons exposed the defect before edits. The revised scalar replay on original builders is retrospective.
The CI follow-up records conditional inline-wrapper type repair, grouped publication calibration, and replay registration. Aggregate provenance and overload simplification change types without adding runtime markers or traversal. A later type repair gives possibly-empty declared grouping lists an optional missing
$key. Production source at ce94a39 matches d894ff6.✅ Checklist
